AGGIORNAMENTI DA ERNST JORGENSEN
Durante una breve apparizione all’Elvis Insiders Conference tenutasi a Memphis, Ernst Jorgensen ha rivelato diverse interessanti novità per i collezionisti: la BMG è in procinto di emettere una versione integrale della mitica jam session del ‘Million Dollar Quartet’ tratta da un nastro reperito direttamente dalla collezione privata di Elvis che sembra sia di miglior qualità e soprattutto completo.
Per il prossimo Natale la BMG emetterà un nuovo (l’ennesimo) CD di canzoni natalizie.
Sembra inoltre che il concerto di beneficenza del 1961 per il USS Arizona Memorial alle Hawaii sarà riproposto in qualità audio superiore.
Sul fronte della Follow That Dream, le prossime novità saranno:
- un’edizione speciale dell’album gospel His Hand In Mine
- un doppio CD di cui la prima parte sarà dedicata ad alcuni demo originali di diversi autori che scrissero canzoni per Elvis (tra cui Jorgensen ha citato ‘Teddy Bear’ di Otis Blackwell e ‘Slowly But Surely’ di P.J. Proby), la seconda parte alle versioni cantate da Elvis. Non vi dovrebbero essere outtakes di nessun genere.

Siccome la registrazione non è completa il Cd conterrà anche parte del concerto di due giorni dopo a Kalamazoo. L’etichetta S&R ha annunciato il suo quinto CD in uscita nei primi di luglio e intitolato "The Sound Of Vegas Vol. 1". Conterrà registrazioni amatoriali inedite in qualità eccellente del Dinner Show di Elvis a Las Vegas dell’8 agosto 1973. La durata del Cd è di circa un’ora. Elvis, in gran forma vocale e psicologica, per l’occasione ci offre una performance di alto livello in cui spiccano il pezzo gospel ‘How Great Thou Art’ e la commovente ‘My Boy’. Il Cd è accompagnato da un libretto a colori di 8 pagine con varie foto rare scattate a Las Vegas nel periodo di agosto e settembre del 1973. Secondo alcune fonti, quest’anno la BMG (o più verosimilmente la Follow That Dream), in occasione del 50° anniversario dell’evento, avrebbe in cantiere une versione deluxe della mitica jam session che il 4 dicembre 1956 vide riunito alla Sun Studio il leggendario Million Dollar Quartet (Elvis, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis e Johnny Cash). Le fonti, questa volta, dovrebbero provenire da nastri di qualità notevolmente superiore alle precedenti edizioni e per la prima volta i brani saranno ordinati secondo la corretta sequenza originale. Il CD durerà inoltre 12 minuti in più.

PROMO RARISSIMO VENDUTO SU EBAY
Un rarissimo CD promo australiano intitolato ‘Cream of the Catalog’, è stato recentemente venduto su Ebay per quasi 170 dollari. Poco meno di 50 copie del CD in questione furono stampate a metà degli anni ’90. Nel novembre 2003 la rivista inglese ‘Record Collector’ aveva classificato questo Cd come il 5° CD promo di Elvis più raro al mondo valutandolo circa 870 dollari. Negli ultimi tre anni altre due copie del CD erano state vendute ad un prezzo di 500 dollari cadauna.

Il Cd bootleg ‘Hello Memphis’ contenente un soundboard della performance del 16 marzo 1974 è stato riproposto in edizione digipack. Il design non è bello come la precedente edizione, ma la qualità sonora è identica.
Inoltre, il settimo volume della serie di CD promo realizzati dal fan club olandese Elvis For Everyone intitolato "From Union Avenue To Thomas Street 1954 - 1969" è stato anch’esso recentemente riedito in digipack.
Infine anche il 33 giri ‘Sunshine’ della Universe con alcuni hit del periodo Sun sarà presto disponibile su CD.

Il CD "Elvis Broadcasts on Air", uscito originariamente nel 2002, sarà riproposto in Europa il 30 giugno 2006 dall’etichetta Neo Cleopa, affiliata della Sony BMG. Il Cd comprende il materiale audio d’archivio registrato tra il 1954 e il 1956 degli show radiofonici della KWKH, la quale trasmetteva il Louisiana Hayride. Esso si presenta con un libretto con note esplicative di Dave Thompson. Tutte le tracce sono state rimasterizzate utilizzando la tecnologia 24 bit. Ascoltate a 50 anni di distanza e con il crepitio tipico degli acetati dell’epoca, queste performance seguono il percorso di Elvis da talento grezzo e incontrollato a star del rock’n’roll delle origini. CLOSING NIGHT 1970
L’etichetta Graceland Records ha emesso un CD intitolato ‘Closing Night’ contenente una registrazione completa in soundboard del ‘Closing Show’ datato 23 febbraio 1970 a Las Vegas. La stessa etichetta nel 2005 aveva emesso il Cd “Elvis’ Second Night”. L’attuale CD è corredato da un libretto informativo di 16 pagine colmo di foto scattate in quel periodo, la maggior parte delle quali proprio durante il concerto in questione che è veramente eccezionale. Elvis resta sul palco più a lungo del solito e, tra le altre cose, propone esplosive versioni al piano di Lawdy Miss Clawdy e Blueberry Hill e alla chitarra elettrica con ‘One Night’ e ‘It’s Now or Never’. La registrazione di questo show proviene da due fonti distinte che sono poi state unite per il trasferimento su CD e l’audio è stato rimasterizzato per ottenere il miglior risultato possibile. Per finire in bellezza vi sono anche curiosità e aneddoti riguardanti il periodo in questione. Una curiosità: durante lo show Elvis accenna anche una strofa di ‘Everybody Loves Somebody’ di Dean Martin.

Il nuovo CD della Straight Arrow, in uscita il prossimo Giugno, sarà un altro show del tour del febbraio 1977, precisamente quello del 15 febbraio a Orlando in Florida e si intitolerà ‘Going back in Time’. La qualità audio è amatoriale ma come bonus sono stati aggiunti 14 minuti dello stesso concerto registrati in qualità soundboard.

Il fan club olandese Elvis For Everyone sta lavorando alla realizzazione di un nuovo CD intitolato ‘Elvis at 21’. Esso conterrà 25 brani tra cui 2 spot per le radio, 11 interviste complete e 4 estratti. Come si evince dal titolo del Cd, esso offrirà un tributo al periodo in cui Elvis aveva 21 anni, quindi il 1956. Il libretto allegato conterà ben pagine e la qualità audio delle tracce dovrebbe essere molto buona.

A THUNDER IN THE NIGHT
L’etichetta S&R Records, che ha emesso anche i CD "Trying To Get To Memphis", "Not Too Sweet" e "Setting The Standard", verso la fine di marzo ci proporrà "A Thunder In The Night", contenente il Midnight Show del 1° Agosto 1971 a Lake Tahoe in qualità audio amatoriale. Lo show, sebbene conosciuto dai più accaniti collezionisti, non sarebbe tuttavia mai stato disponibile in questa qualità prima d’ora. Il suono è stato restaurato professionalmente e questo show è inoltre uno dei più elettrizzanti del 1971, durante il quale Elvis, già di buon umore, diede ampio sfoggio delle sue qualità vocali. Uno dei momenti più interessanti della performance è l’esecuzione rara del pezzo gospel ‘I, John’. Il Cd contiene un libretto di 8 pagine a colori dal layout professionale con varie foto. Tracklist:

ONE NIGHT ONLY!
La Madison emetterà presto un CD intitolato "One Night Only!"contenente l’unica performance a Boston di Elvis del 10 novembre 1971. Questo show era stato già proposto in Cd nel ’97 con il titolo di "The Power Of Shazam". La qualità sonora di quell’emissione lasciava molto a desiderare e aveva sminuito la grande performance che Elvis regalò ai fans quella sera. Ma recentemente la Madison è riuscita ad acquisire un soundboard di prima generazione, ottenendo così un audio eccellente che renderà questo concerto il migliore del 1971 che sia mai stato emesso su CD.

L'etichetta "Straight Arrow'' che ha prodotto il CD "Pieces Of My Life" (SA 2005-1-02) farà uscire un nuovo CD alla fine del mese dal titolo "Tennessee Starlight" (SA2006-2-02) contenente la registrazione amatoriale dello show del 19 Febbraio 1977 a Johnson City della durata di circa 68 minuti.

Per il mese di Marzo la nuova etichetta discografica Audiophile Records produrrà un CD intitolato "The Vegas Years Volume 1".
Esso conterrà una registrazione amatoriale del Midnight Show del 31 marzo 1975 a Las Vegas. Secondo alcune indiscrezioni l’audio sarebbe stato rimasterizzato e il sound risulterebbe inoltre eccellente considerata la fonte.
I bonus contenuti nel Cd sono tratti dal Dinner e Midnight Show del 30 marzo 1975. La durata complessiva del Cd è di circa 78 minuti.

La Jam Session informale improvvisata del 4 dicembre 1956 alla quale presero parte Elvis, Carl Perkins e Jerry Lee Lewis è oggi considerata uno degli eventi più significativi del 1956 per la carriera de Re del R’n’R. Anche Johnny Cash venne immortalato nella famosa foto presente sulla copertina di questo nuovo Cd della Charly Records, ma poi in realtà non vi partecipò. Per festeggiare il 50° anniversario dell’evento uscirà così un doppio Cd in edizione speciale contenente 41 canzoni della Session nel primo Cd e nel secondo 32 classici di Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash e Jerry Lee Lewis che hanno visto la luce alla Sun.
